The role of the cerebellum in voluntary eye movements.

In general the cerebellum is crucial for the control but not the initiation of movement. Voluntary eye movements are particularly useful for investigating the specific mechanisms underlying cerebellar control because they are precise and their brain-stem circuitry is already well understood. Here we describe single-unit and inactivation data showing that the posterior vermis and the caudal fast...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation over the cerebellum and eye movements: state of the art.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) transiently induces an electrical field in the tissues beneath the area of application, thereby perturbing local cortical activity if applied over the scalp. It can therefore be used to modulate cerebellar function in healthy humans. Even though the role of the cerebellum in eye movement control and adaptation is well known, few experiments have used eye ...

Acquisition of neural learning in cerebellum and cerebral cortex for smooth pursuit eye movements.

We evaluated the emergence of neural learning in the frontal eye fields (FEF(SEM)) and the floccular complex of the cerebellum while monkeys learned a precisely timed change in the direction of pursuit eye movement. For each neuron, we measured the time course of changes in neural response across a learning session that comprised at least 100 repetitions of an instructive change in target direc...

Eye Movements and Schizophrenia

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) has been reported to be abnormal in schizophrenic patients. 30 schizophrenic patients and 15 normal subjects were examined for the quality of their smooth pursuit performance. 73.33% of the schizophrenics and 40% of the normal subjects had 'impaired' pursuit performance. The significance of the findings has been discussed.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation over the posterior cerebellum during smooth pursuit eye movements in man.

Recent neurophysiological experiments in the monkey have demonstrated that the flocculus and the posterior vermis, lobules VIc-VII (oculomotor vermis), are involved in the generation of pursuit eye movements. Whereas the functions of the flocculus in the control of smooth pursuit have been intensively investigated, sufficient data are not available for a profitable discussion of the functions o...
